Aeration: oxygen and movement in water
Aeration: oxygen and movement in water
Standing water deteriorates: bacteria die off, the water starts to smell and algae growth develops. Aeration prevents this. By continuously introducing air into the water, it keeps moving, oxygen remains available and water quality is maintained. DOVAC supplies the blowers, accessories and complete aeration solutions for a wide range of applications. Thanks to an accurate calculation, every installation is matched to the required air volume, pressure and energy efficiency.
Air in the water: how it works and where it is used
The principle is simple. A blower, for example a side channel blower, Roots blower or turbo blower, draws in ambient air and forces it under pressure through pipework lying in or under the water. The air rises as bubbles through small openings. On its way to the surface, each bubble releases oxygen into the water and the rising airflow creates circulation.
The applications vary widely. Growers collect rainwater in large basins to irrigate crops in the greenhouse; that water has to keep moving so that the beneficial bacteria stay alive. In swimming pools and wellness, aeration produces the bubbles in jacuzzis and bubble loungers and keeps sand filter installations running. And in water treatment and waste processing, oxygen is introduced with a targeted airflow to keep biological breakdown going.
Aeration is also used in ponds, aquaculture, industrial water storage and other processes where sufficient oxygen and water circulation are essential for stable water quality.
The problem of standing and incorrectly aerated water
Without aeration, standing water produces exactly what nobody wants: oxygen shortage, dying bacteria, odour and blue-green algae. For a grower that means unusable irrigation water; for a pool operator a filter installation that does not perform or a bubble pool without bubbles.
But a system that does aerate can also be sized incorrectly. The water depth determines the back pressure the blower has to overcome; the length of the pipework and the number and size of the openings determine the required air volume. A blower standing 3 metres from the basin requires a different specification from one at a considerable distance.
The risks of incorrect sizing
A blower that is too small delivers too little air: the desired effect does not materialise and the water problem remains. A blower that is too large continuously wastes energy, and with aeration that weighs heavily, because the system runs virtually all the time. If the protective accessories are missing, failures are added to that: water running back into the blower, dust ending up in the water or a blower burning out as the back pressure rises.
Because aeration installations often run 24 hours a day, correct selection of the blower has a direct effect on the total energy costs over the service life of the installation.
Our possibilities

Aerators
Aerators introduce a blower's air into the water as fine bubbles, preventing stagnation, bacterial growth and odour. We calculate the right choice and capacity in advance. The aerators will soon be added to our range; in the meantime, please view DOVAC\'s full product range or contact us.

Side channel blowers
Side channel blowers move large air volumes, suiting aeration, conveying and porous materials. Oil-free and low-maintenance, from compact single-stage to two-stage models, including ATEX.

Roots & vacuum boosters
A booster upstream of an existing vacuum pump increases pumping speed and vacuum depth, shortening cycle times without replacing the set-up.
Benefits for your business
- Stable water quality that needs no attention
- A blower that is protected against the most common causes of failure
- Energy consumption that matches actual demand rather than a generous guess
- Less maintenance and a longer service life of the installation
Thanks to a well-designed installation, not only is water quality maintained, but maintenance costs and unplanned failures are also reduced to a minimum.
Because energy consumption weighs heavily with continuously running aeration, DOVAC recommends more economical motor classes and more efficient blower types wherever possible, and calculates in advance what that delivers.
The solution: calculated and complete from a single source
DOVAC produces the calculation for every installation and then supplies the complete system: side channel blowers, Roots blowers and energy-efficient turbo blowers, supplemented with the ancillary equipment from stock. Intake filters keep dust out of the water, pressure relief and safety valves protect the blower against excessive back pressure, non-return valves prevent water from running into the blower, and silencers and sound-insulating enclosures resolve noise nuisance. With every quotation, DOVAC advises which accessories are sensible for the service life of the blower; the choice remains with the customer.
Every application calls for a different approach. That is why DOVAC looks not only at the required air capacity, but also at pipe lengths, water depth, pressure losses, operating conditions and future energy consumption.
